Kickstart Scheme

The new Kickstart Scheme unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak during the summer statement aims to help the employment of workers under 16-24 years old by funding employers with a £2 billion budget to cover the complete minimum wage of workers for 25 hours a week, employers may opt to top these salaries up if they see fit

The program benefits young workers who are currently registered for Universal Credit and will be delivered by Job Centre’s.

Employers will be responsible for providing training and support to Kickstart Scheme employees to help them secure permanent jobs.

Any UK enterprise who is able to provide decent jobs may enter the program, provided that the jobs to be assigned are in addition to existing roles within the company

Employers can apply to join the scheme from 2nd September 2020, with the expectation of individuals starting their new roles in autumn and the scheme running until December 2021, with the option of being extended

The scheme will fund workers’ wages for 6 months and additional support for overheads.

Participants can expect to receive £455 per month if they are under 18 years of age, £645 per month if 18 to 20, and £820 per month if 21 to 24. In return, employers will essentially receive government-paid employees for six months.

In addition, businesses taking on a Kickstart candidate can apply for £1,500 per job placement available for setup costs, support and training.
